Rodrigo y Gabriela are delighted to announce the release of Live Manchester and Dublin for the very first time on vinyl. Live Manchester and Dublin was Rodrigo y Gabriela’s first live album recorded at Manchester Academy and Christ Church Cathedral, Dublin in 2004. The album will be released on Record Store day, 16th April 2016.
One / Take FIve
For this special Record Store Day release the album was specially remastered for vinyl from the original source recording by Ray Staff at Air Studios.
Writing in the Guardian at the time of the original album release, journalist John Walters wrote, “Rodrigo y Gabriela’s Live Manchester and Dublin could justifiably claim “traces of heavy metal”. Their Mexican-Flamenco guitar duo repertoire includes a cover of Metallica’s One that moves into Paul Desmond’s Take Five, with a snatch of the White Stripes. There’s a wild streak to these recordings I’ve not heard in previous performances by Rodrigo y Gabriela, and it’s very welcome. This is a World Music album that swings.”
Rodrigo y Gabriela are taking a break from writing their new album, and will play London’s iconic Palladium theatre for the first time. London fans can see Rod & Gab on Tuesday 5th July, more than two years since their last London gigs – two sold-out, seismic nights at the Royal Albert Hall in May 2014.

Rodrigo y Gabriela have recorded a classic Jaco Pastorius track – “Continuum,” from his self-titled 1976 album – which appears on the soundtrack to Jaco, a new documentary by Metallica bassist Robert Trujillo and Jaco’s eldest son, John Pastorius IV.
The film chronicles the brief-but-extraordinary life and career of Pastorius, the remarkably talented Weather Report bassist who died in 1987 at age 35. Jaco became the state-of-the-art electric bass player. To be more accurate, he pushed the state of the art to the point where he defined it. What he did with his instrument was expand it way past its original function of merely supplying the harmonic underpinning to a composition.
While there were other electric bassists with the technical ability to do more, Jaco was probably the first to make the listener aware of a musical idea first, and the instrument playing second.
The two albums in this collection are the foundations of Rodrigo y Gabriela. The album Foc was recorded in their small flat in Dublin in Spring 2001. The songs they recorded had been composed during their time travelling across Europe, and drew inspiration from the cities and people they had met. Their recording equipment was no more elaborate than a simple Korg D8 digital recorder set up on a coffee table between them. A home made and early work it was sold from their guitar cases on the street to listeners passing by.
The album re-foc was an attempt to re-imagine some of those early compositions with an expanded sound, while also adding newer songs. re-foc would go on to be the first official release in record shops, and was for many people their initial introduction to Rodrigo y Gabriela.
Foc has never before been released commercially. As the sound of Rodrigo y Gabriela developed over the years into what it has now become, they felt that this early, almost tentative work was best left to this learning period of their career. In a similar way, the expanded ‘group’ sound that they achieved on re-foc was also something which they would move away from on future albums choosing to focus more on the direct sound of just two guitars. Now it feels like the right time to shine a light in the attic, and these albums are now presented in a deluxe hardbound book featuring the two albums on CD and a DVD featuring Rodrigo y Gabriela’s debut TV performance.
This deluxe package is available to pre-order now and will be released on 27th November 2015. Pre-order and you will receive four tracks from the album to download right away. This package is only available from RodGab.com and will not be sold in shops.
